Surviving one of the World’s Toughest Races: Cocodona 250

The Cocodona 250 is currently underway with runners experiencing cold temperatures, rain and a blistering starting pace to start the fourth edition of this increasingly popular race. A 250-mile ultramarathon that traverses Arizona’s diverse terrain, including deserts, mountains, and forests. With over 40,000 feet of elevation gain, runners face extreme conditions, such as temperatures ranging from 80°F to 100°F during the day and dropping below freezing at night.

Runners often break the race into manageable sections, focusing on reaching the next aid station or landmark. Jonathan van Geuns, who placed eighth in the 2024 race, utilises this approach to maintain focus and motivation .

2. Process-Oriented Goals
Instead of fixating on the overall distance, athletes set specific, controllable goals for each segment. This method helps in maintaining a sense of accomplishment and momentum throughout the race .

3. Emotional Regulation
Dealing with lows and fatigue is crucial. Participants often employ mindfulness and self-talk to manage discomfort and maintain a positive mindset during challenging moments.
