Although the Mental Toughness MTQ Plus framework is modern, and the concept of enhancing mental toughness is a relatively modern term, its roots date back tens of thousands of years and form part of our evolutionary legacy. Most of us are familiar with the “fight or flight” response, initially triggered by life-threatening situations faced by our ancestors, such as encounters with sabre-toothed tigers or rival tribes. Enhancing mental toughness is crucial in managing these responses in today’s world.
Today, our nervous system can still generate a similar stress response, even when dealing with seemingly mundane events like a low phone battery or being stuck in traffic. Fast-forward to 400 BC, we encounter Plato’s four cardinal virtues, including Wisdom (stemming from self-awareness) and Courage (defined as “having emotional power and the ability to withstand adversity”. Enhancing mental toughness by applying these virtues can help us manage modern-day stressors more effectively.
Another 500 years later, we witnessed the emergence of the predominantly Roman Stoic movement, featuring prominent figures such as Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. Their teachings continue to be relevant today. In the late 20th century, academics like Kasarek, Kobasa, and sports coach Dr. Jim Loehr built upon these foundations, with Loehr coining the term “Mental Toughness” and recognising its significance in unlocking one’s full potential. Enhancing mental toughness through these teachings allows individuals to thrive despite challenges.
Loehr’s groundbreaking work inspired UK sports psychologist and Hull University Professor Peter Clough to research Mental Toughness further. In 2002, Clough and his team developed the 4C’s mental toughness framework, which later evolved into the highly valid and reliable evidence-based MTQ Plus measure in 2018, thanks to the collaboration with Doug Strycharczyk at AQR International. The MTQ Plus framework boasts tens of thousands of users worldwide, all benefiting from enhancing mental toughness through this comprehensive tool.
