Part of the thrill of pursuit is that it is impossible to predict just how the path will unfold or be paved as you move. We often think we can make a solid plan and with decent accuracy understand how it will go. However, there are always hiccups, backpedals, derailments, and full on stops that need to be calmed, redirected, set straight and sometimes removed to press on. Sometimes we can take caution for a likely event or interruption like weather, crowds, long lines, rough terrain, wildlife, and food or water scarcity on the way to a goal. Often though things come up we just cannot foresee. When this happens, the choice is ours.
Mentally tough people embrace the challenge, because being mentally tough means not just bouncing back from adversity, that’s resilience, it means thriving in difficulty. Elite athletes do not show up to a match and complain that it is hard. They already know it, they want it, they love it, and they are ready to deploy the results of their commitment and consistency. They control what they can and confidently adapt, flex, and adjust in cadence with what is out of their hands.
This approach is applicable in all areas of life.
Mental toughness does not equal perfection. It is not a win every time. It is that trait that compels and fuels you to keep showing up. Keep putting in the work. Keep moving toward that goal, despite the grind, despite the falls, despite the loneliness. One long, heavy, grueling step forward is still a step forward.
Inhale, dig deep, get going and enjoy.
I will too.
