Strong in the Small Things

When people hear Mental Toughness, they usually picture athletes pushing past limits or CEOs making tough calls. But I believe some of the most powerful examples show up in the small, everyday things we do.

It’s the Mom who takes a deep breath instead of snapping when her kids have no sense of urgency about the schedule. It’s the woman who speaks up because it matters, even though her voice is shaking. It’s choosing to lace up your shoes for a quick walk instead of scrolling numbly after a long day.

At the core of mental toughness is the ability to adjust, recover, and keep going even when things don’t go the way you planned. You have to be able to bend and flex with the unexpected. Sometimes that looks like giving yourself grace, taking the next right step, or coming back to try again tomorrow.

In my work, I remind clients, guests, and myself that mental strength isn’t about being perfect or unshakable; it’s about practicing small choices that build a capacity to handle life as it comes. Those choices stack up. They make you steadier, stronger, and more confident over time.

So the next time you notice yourself choosing patience over frustration, self-compassion over criticism, or persistence over giving up, know this… you’re building mental strength not just in rare, extraordinary moments, but in the everyday ones that add up over time.
