Progress over Perfection Isn’t Just Good Advice

We want to do things the right way, the first time, gaining projected results with no setbacks, no feelings of inadequacy, no repeats, and no heartache.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but this isn’t ever going to be a thing. Life is just not designed that way. You may be able to execute on some tasks, like assemble a bookshelf, with most of those desires being true, but chances are you will get interrupted, have a stripped screw, or put part F on backward and have to redo it. We know things like this are going to come up and potentially derail us from achieving our goals. Life is filled with variables we do not control and often do not even know are impacting our existence.

Mental toughness is engaged when we plan for setbacks, expect the interruption, address it and press on.  We are not surprised by a stripped screw or our humanness in the error of part F. The bookshelf is going to be assembled despite these things, it just might not unfold the way we thought.

As your mental strength grows and you accept that forces outside of you do not always align with your aim, you can focus on controlling what you can and working with the rest. Eventually, you will find yourself enjoying the process… flaws and all.

That’s what it’s all about anyway.

Progress. Moving forward. Heading in the direction of the goal. Small steps are still steps – even when the target feels so far away.

Embrace the adventure. It goes too quick to get caught up in defeat or worse yet, to never start.
