Do you often feel overwhelmed or anxious in challenging social situations? Are you hesitant to speak up or assert yourself, even when you have valuable insights to share? Do you find yourself shrinking back when faced with confident or assertive personalities?
Trust me, I’ve been there too. As a CEO, I often struggled with more assertive personalities, both personally and professionally. Over time, I experimented with different strategies—some worked, some didn’t, but all of them taught me valuable lessons about developing the mental toughness needed to hold my ground.
Here are some of the most effective strategies I used to build inner steel and become more assertive. It’s a process of trial and error; find what works best for you.
1. Practice Self-Reflection
Start by understanding the root causes of your feelings of intimidation. Identify common situations that trigger these feelings, assess your beliefs and values, and reflect on past interactions where you felt overwhelmed. Self-awareness is crucial for developing assertiveness because it helps you anticipate these situations and respond more effectively.
2. Develop Assertiveness Skills
Being assertive doesn’t mean being aggressive—it means confidently expressing your thoughts and needs. Here are some techniques to help you do just that:
• Use “I” statements to express your feelings without blaming others (e.g., “I feel concerned when…”).
• Learn to say “no” firmly and politely without apologising or making excuses.
• Address specific behaviors rather than attacking the person involved.
• Use assertive body language: stand up straight, make eye contact, and use purposeful gestures to project confidence, even if you don’t feel it initially. This approach has been a game-changer for me.
3. Practice Active Listening and Effective Communication
Good communication is a two-way street. Improve your active listening skills to better understand others’ perspectives, which can help you articulate your own thoughts and needs more clearly and confidently.
4. Set Personal Boundaries
Establish clear boundaries on what you will and won’t accept from others. Understand what the “hill you’re prepared to die on” looks like—what values or positions you’re willing to stand firm on. Setting boundaries gives you an element of control over how you respond in challenging social situations, preventing you from feeling overwhelmed.
5. Focus on Your Strengths
Identify and build on your existing assertive qualities. Recognising your strengths can boost your self-esteem and motivation, making it easier to face challenging situations with confidence.
6. Start Small and Build Confidence
Begin with low-risk situations to practice your assertiveness. For example, send back an incorrect order at a restaurant or express your preference for where to eat with friends. These small steps can help build your confidence over time.
7. Seek Support and Feedback
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find a coach, mentor, or support group to help you develop assertiveness skills and overcome intimidation. Getting feedback from trusted individuals can provide valuable insights and encouragement.
8. Prepare Mentally for Challenging Situations
Anticipate potentially intimidating scenarios and practice your responses in advance. This mental rehearsal can help reduce anxiety and boost your confidence when you face these situations in real life.
9. Cultivate a Growth Mindset
View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than as obstacles. Embrace the idea that assertiveness is a skill that can be developed over time. Every situation is a chance to improve.
Trial, Implement, and Thrive!
By experimenting with these strategies and implementing the ones that resonate most with you, you can gradually overcome feelings of intimidation, become more assertive, and build the “steel” needed to navigate challenging social situations and interactions with confidence.
Which Strategy Will Help You Most?
Consider which of these strategies could help you most in overcoming a lack of assertiveness. Remember, progress is made step by step.
