You’re exhausted. But your brain won’t stop spinning. You lie in bed running tomorrow’s to-do list or reliving today’s awkward moment. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. This is the fatigue-flooded mind—tired, wired, and stuck in overdrive. Many people struggle with how to switch off from work effectively.
For high performers, the line between work and rest often blurs. Mental rest becomes elusive, and recovery gets replaced with numbing behaviours: scrolling, snacking, or zoning out in front of screens. But these offer distraction, not renewal.
The fix isn’t more effort. It’s smarter recovery.
Here are a few strategies:
- Create a shutdown cue: Something that signals to your brain, “we’re done for today.” It could be a journal entry, a playlist, or a routine.
- Move toward stillness gradually: Don’t expect your nervous system to go from 100 to 0. Use low-stimulus transitions like reading or stretching.
- Anchor your thoughts: Use a mindfulness exercise or breathwork to shift out of rumination and into presence.
Mental toughness includes recognising when to push—and when to pause. Learning how to deactivate is just as important as learning how to focus.
You don’t have to earn rest. But you do have to create the conditions for it. Train your body and brain to recognise when it’s safe to let go.
